Bumper Grape Harvest Goes To Waste 04/04/2005

An ideal growing season has resulted in bigger yields than expected in South Australia for the 2005 vintage.

Many observers expect that 20,000 tonnes of grapes, enough for 20 million bottles, will be left to rot this vintage in South Australia's Riverland (Murray River area). This is because the prices wineries are offering will not cover harvest costs. Prices have fallen to as low as $150 a tonne.


Federal Government Enquiry Into Wine Industry

The Federal Government announced in mid March 2005 an inquiry into the wine industry. The inquiry comes after concerns about the low grape prices wineries were offering to growers for the 2005 vintage. The Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Committee will focus on the supply and purchase of grapes. Growers are being asked to submit their views and experiences to the committee.

 

Tasmanian 2005 Harvest 04/04/2005

It's harvest time for wine grape growers on the cooler, southern island of Tasmania, and the first grapes have started hitting the presses for sparkling wines.

Somewhere between 10 and 20 per cent of Tasmania's production goes into sparkling wines, primarily made from pinot noir and chardonnay.

Australia is set to overtake Italy as the biggest exporter of wine into the United States by the end of 2005.

Total sales of Australian wine to the US were up to 20 million cases of wine last year, in second place behind Italy which sold just over 22 million cases.
